As a landscape designer based in Chicago, my passion for creating beautiful, functional gardens isn’t just a career—it’s a lifelong love. From childhood, I was drawn to the lush landscapes my mom and grandmother carefully cultivated. Their green thumbs and thoughtful approach to garden planning shaped the way I see the world today. That early connection to gardens not only inspired my career but also led me to explore gardens around the world, deepening my appreciation for the art of landscape design.
One of the most recent gardens I visited was the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami. It’s more than just a stunning example of garden design—it’s a place that embodies history, elegance, and the power of nature to transform a space. As I wandered its breathtaking grounds, I reflected on how gardens create a connection between people and the natural world. While my daughters aren’t quite as inspired by these visits yet, I love sharing these experiences with them, just as my mother and grandmother once shared their love of gardening with me.
Growing up, my mom and grandmother were always in the garden. My mom would spend hours carefully planting flowers, herbs, and shrubs, always striving to create harmony and flow. I would often tag along, watching, asking questions, and learning. The way they could transform any space with a few plants and thoughtful design left a lasting impression. To this day, I feel that same sense of joy and wonder when I visit new gardens.
As a professional in landscape design, I get to blend that childhood admiration with a practical approach. My experiences in renowned gardens like Vizcaya shape my design philosophy—creating spaces that foster tranquility and a deep connection with nature. Whether designing a small backyard in the heart of Chicago or a sprawling suburban garden, my goal is to craft spaces where people feel both inspired and at peace.
I believe a well-designed garden is more than just something to admire—it’s something to experience. The way a garden flows with the seasons, the interplay of color and texture, the quiet corners that invite reflection, and the open spaces that encourage connection—all of these elements combine to create something greater than the sum of their parts.
That’s why I still love visiting gardens like Vizcaya. They remind me of the roots of my passion—of walking hand in hand with my mother through lush greenery, learning to appreciate beauty in the smallest details. And while my daughters may not yet share my enthusiasm, I hope that one day, these garden visits will leave an impression on them as well. Every garden I explore fills me with fresh inspiration for my work, and every space I design is an opportunity to share that sense of peace and wonder with others.
